In the spirit of astronomy and gastronomy

Our visit to RC Coevorden, 3-5 June 2023

We have been close friends with the Rotary Club Coevorden for 30 years now - and so we were really looking forward to a sociable weekend together. We were not disappointed, because our friends from Coevorden had organized a wonderful program for us. Golf enthusiasts were able to test out the Golf Resort Zuiddrenthe in Erica on Friday, and in the evening everyone came together for dinner in Dalen. Together with the Dutch, we were a group of over 40 people - the reunion after a year was happily celebrated.

Saturday was a real highlight. We had the chance to visit "Astron" - the Netherlands Institute for Astronomy - and the radio telescope there! There we learned more about radio astronomy and current and future projects in which Astron is involved. It was exciting for everyone that we could observe and hear a pulsar and the sun live in the radio telescope! The radio telescope was put into operation in 1956, and at the time it was the largest radio telescope in the world with its 25 meter diameter.

After a relaxed lunch, an entertaining hike was scheduled that took us through the Dwingelerveld nature reserve. And later the astronomy continued, because "after astronomy comes gastronomy," as Klaas from RC Coevorden aptly noted. The evening was all about a culinary fireworks display in the De Woage restaurant, which recently received a star - another very special experience!

On Sunday we said goodbye after breakfast together and headed home. We would like to thank RC Coevorden for organizing the event and are already looking forward to seeing you again next year. Tot Ziens!
